How my Russian friend's grandfather survived WWII [True Story, quoted from his grandfather]

The year was 1943. My squad was surrounded and captured by Germans. We were given shovels and told to dig a pit two meters deep, then we were arranged in a line next to the pit.

때는 1943년. 내 분대는 독일군에게 포위당해 결국은 포로의 신세가 되었다. 우리는 각자 삽을 받았고 그것으로 2미터 정도의 구덩이를 파라고 하였다. 그리고 구덩이 옆에 나란히 세워졌다.

"Jews, step forward!" The German officer barked at us in broken Russian. He sternly gazed upon our squad, waiting for us to move.

"유대인들! 앞으로!" 독일군 장교가 어설픈 러시아어로 우리에게 짖었다. 그는 우리가 움직이기를 기다리면서 지긋히 바라보았다.

As the Jewish soldiers of our squad stepped forward, the officer yelled at them to get in the pit. They jumped in, accepting their fate.

우리분대의 유대인 병사들이 앞으로 걸어갔고, 장교는 그들에게 구덩이 속으로 들어가라 말했다. 그들은 자신들의 운명을 받아들이면서 구덩이 속으로 뛰어들었다.

"The rest of you Russians, bury the Jews. Now!" The officer yelled; but we didn't budge. We wouldn't betray our brothers like that, we refused.

"남은 러시아인들, 유대인들을 묻어버려. 당장!" 장교가 우리에게 소리질렀지만 우리는 꼼짝도 하지 않았다. 우리들의 형제를 그렇게 배신할순 없었기에 우리들은 거절했다.

The officer smirked, and yelled at the ones in the pit to get out. "The ones that didn't go in, it's your turn to get in now." We then silently jumped in the pit, making an attempt to sacrifice ourselves to save our Jewish comrades. "Jews, bury your friends!" The officer ordered.

장교가 비웃었다. 그리고 구덩이에 있는 유대인들에게 나오라 말했다. "구덩이에 들어가지 않은놈들, 이제 너희들 차례다." 우리 자신들을 희생하고 유대인 동료들을 구하기 위해서 우리들은조용히 구덩이 속으로 들어갔다.

"유대인들, 너희 친구들을 묻어라!" 장교가 명령했다.

They started to fill the pit. The earth touched our knees, then chests, then our necks, and it was almost impossible to breathe. Then, the officer ordered them to stop. He smiled and walked over to us, and bent down to say to ask, "Russians, now do you see what Jews are like?"

그들은 구덩이를 채우기 시작했다. 흙이 다리에, 가슴에, 목에 그리고 결국에는 숨쉬기가 거의 불가능해질 정도였다. 그때, 장교가 유대인들에게 멈추라 명령했다. 그는 웃으면서 우리를 향해 걸어오더니 몸을 구부리면서 우리에게 물었다. "러시아인들, 이제 유대인들이 어떤놈들인 줄 알겠지?"

We were dug up, and promptly released; all except our Jewish brothers. But we didn't want them to come with us; not because they were Jews, but because they were cowards. That was the closest I have ever been to death, but I learned which brothers truly cared for my life. No ghost story can scare me more than the Germans.

유대인 동료들은 제외한, 우리들은 즉시 흙으로 가득채워졌던 구덩이로부터 나왔다. 우리들은 그들이 함께 오는걸 원치 않았다. 유대인들이라서가 아니라 겁쟁이라서 말이지.. 그 때가 내가 가장 죽음에 가까웠을 때엿지, 그렇지만 어떤 브라더스가 내 삶을 걱정해주는지 알게 되었지(어떤 사람들이 진정한 친구들인지 알게 되었지) 나에게는 어떤 유령의 이야기도 독일군들 보다 무서울순 없을거야.

This story is NOT meant to say that Jews are bad people. It is to show the worst type of horror is war, the dark reasons behind it, and how nothing is scarier than the thought of inevitable death. If this story offends anyone who is Jewish, I offer my most sincerest apologies.

이 이야기는 유대인들이 나쁘다는걸 얘기하는게 아니라 전쟁이 최악의 호러라는걸 보여주기 위해서임, 그리고 불가피한 죽음에 대한 생각이 어떤것과도 비교될수 없다는것도. 만약 이 이야기가 어떤 유대인에게 기분 나빳다면, 정말 미안해.
