The Gezira Scheme is one of the largest irrigation projects in the world, situated at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile Rivers near the city of Khartoum, Sudan. Because the soil slopes away from the rivers, water naturally flows through 2,700 miles of irrigation canals with gravity. The project covers a total 3,400 square miles, approximately half of the country's total land under irrigation.
