법궁(法宮)인 경복궁에 이어 이궁(離宮)으로 창건하였지만, 임금들이 주로 창덕궁에 머물면서 조선시대 실질적인 법궁의 역할을 하였다. 이런 역사적 이유로, 창덕궁은 조선왕조 건물 가운데 가장 역사성을 인정받고 있으며, 1997년 12월 6일 유네스코(UNESCO) 세계문화유산에 등재되어 그 대표성을 인정받았다. 그런 곳에 개인 주택이 존재한다니 믿을 수가 창덕궁 궁궐 담 안에 있는 2층 개인 주택이다. 궁궐을 정원 삼고 궁궐 돌담을 담벼락 삼은 이 개인 주택은 1960년대 창덕궁 관리소장의 관사로 사용되다가 이후 문화공보부 간부가 사유지로 사들여 개인 주택이 된 건물이다. 현재 소유자는 1980년대 초에 이 집을 매입해 거주하고 있으며, 창덕궁 돌담의 일부는 아예 개인 주택의 철문으로 개조된 상황이다. 창덕궁이 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정된 것이 1997년인데, 그 후에도 어떻게 이런 상황이 버젓이 방치돼 온 것일까. (중략) 1960년대가 아무리 어수룩한 시대라 하더라도 창덕궁 관리소장 관사를 문화공보부 간부가 매입하여 사유지화하는 황당무계한 일이 어떻게 가능했던 것일까. 어느 바보가 창덕궁 안에 있는 집을 살 것이며, 돈을 주고 궁궐 그것도 담장 안의 관리소장 관사 건물을 매입해서 자기 소유로 등기했다는 것이 법적으로도 잘 이해가 되지 않는다.></span><br 김○○씨이다. 김씨는 1981년 8월 해당 부동산을 매입한 것으로 기록되어 있다. 해당 건물이 김모씨에게 넘어오는 과정은 매우 흥미롭다.</span><br style="margin:0px;padding:0px;color:#333333;font-family:'돋움', Dotum, '굴림', Gulim, AppleGothic, 무너져 없어질 때까지 단 한 번 하게 된다. 이씨는 1957년 7월부터 ‘벽돌 기와지붕 2층 주택 건평 33평 외 2층 17평’을 소유한 것으로 나타나 있다. 의문이 드는 것은 어떤 근거로, 20년 넘게 이씨가 해당 건물에 거주할 수 있었느냐는 사실이다. 이씨가 해당 주택에 거주하게 된 배경에 대한 설명을 부동산 증명서에서 찾을 수는
