On May 17, 2017, Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS), one of the major TV-radio networks in Korea, used a compilation of TIME Magazine's covers that featured Korean presidents (Kim Young-sam, Kim Dae-jung, Roh Moo-hyun, etc.) in one of their news segments.
When the segment was published, many viewers have noticed that the TIME cover featuring Mr. Roh Moo-hyun (March 2003) was carefully doctored, with the "TIME" branding and the headline modified. The original headline, "Hello, Mr. Roh" was changed to "Go To Hell[,] Mr. Roh." This image in concern originated from an internet community called "ILBE," abhorred for their offensive rhetoric. I would not be surprised if your Korea desk attests to this fact and have colorful comments about them.
Appropriately, the viewers were outraged and led to a barrage of complaints submitted against the network. SBS, in a delayed manner, posted an apology letter online, but the public’s outrage has yet to be quelled. SBS had similar situations like this in the past, using doctored and insulting images from the “ILBE” community. The Blue House (Cheongwadae) and the new administration expressed their concerns on this matter and requested SBS to investigate this situation. The surviving family of Mr. Roh have announced that they are planning to pursue legal means against the network.
I understand that parodies and artful recreations of copyrighted material are considered “free speech” in most cases. However, ILBE’s sinister modification of YOUR cover against one of the most beloved people in Korea, as well as the use of the image by SBS causes grave concern. Without explanation, viewers of the content may confuse the doctored cover for the real one. As I consider ILBE’s reputation in Korean society, the recent feature on President Moon Jae-in, and the impact this situation is having on the Korean public, I fear that TIME’s reputation for quality journalism will be greatly compromised.
