The interactions between prisoners and guards resulted in the adoption by one group of a self-image proposed by another; to understand why, however, we must know about the social structure of the camp; and about the historical development of the wider social structure, in two respects- firstly, what in the wider social structure was responsible for the narrower social structure of the camp; secondly, what features of the wider social structure, via the socialization process provided the basic for different types of attitudes among the prisoners themselves (cf. Goffman, 1970).



 포로들과 경비대 사이의 상호작용들은 다른그룹에 의해 제안된 자아상이 또다른 한 무리에 채택되는 결과를 낳았다.  그러나 왜 그런지를 이해하기 위해서 우리는 수용소의 사회구조에 대해 반드시 알아야한다. 그리고 넓은 사회구조의 역사적인 발전에 대한 두가지 측면을 알아야만 한다.  첫째로, 넓은 사회구조는 수용소의 좁은 사회구조에 책임이있다는 것이고, 둘째로, 넓은 사회구조의 특징들이 사회화 과정을 거쳐 포로 본인들 사이에 태도의 다른 유형들에 대한 근거를 제공했다는 것이다.
