히틀러와 나찌가 눈 앞에서 활동하던 1940년, 히틀러와 동년배였던 Charlie Chaplin이 만들고 주연한 영화 The Great Dictator(위대한 독재자)에 나오는 명연설입니다. 76년 후인 오늘 한국에 있는 우리에게도 적용되는 내용이네요! 바람직한 사회가 어떤 것인지, 현실은 어떠한지, 어떻게 행동해야 하는지 많은 영감을 주는 연설인 듯 합니다.

시작과 끝 장명, 연설 내용은 원 영화와 같지만 중간에 여러 영상자료와 자막을 넣어 편집한 유튜브 영상입니다.

시사적인 내용이기도 하고 영어 공부도 될 것 같아, 영상 아래에 영어 대사와 (약간의 첨삭을 가한) 한국어 자막을 함께 올립니다.

I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible--Jew, Gentile, black men, white…

미안합니다만, 나는 황제가 되고 싶지 않군요. 그건 내 할 일이 아닙니다. 누군가를 다스리거나 정복하고 싶지도 않습니다. 가능하다면 모든 이들을 돕고 싶습니다. 유대인, 비유대인, 흑인, 백인이던 간에.

 

We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.

우리 모두는 서로 돕기를 원합니다. 인류란 그런 것입니다. 남의 불행을 딛고 사는 것이 아니라 남이 행복한 가운데 살기를 원합니다. 우리는 남을 미워하거나 경멸하고 싶지 않습니다. 세상에는 모두를 위한 자리가 있고, 풍요로운 대지는 모두를 위한 양식을 줍니다. 인생은 자유롭고 아름다울 수 있는데도, 우리는그 방법을 잃고 말았습니다.

 

Greed has poisoned men’s souls;has barricaded the world with hate; has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical;our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little.

탐욕이 인간의 영혼을 중독시키고, 세계를 증오의 장벽으로 가로막았는가 하면, 우리에게 불행과 죽음을 가져다 주었습니다. 급속도로 발전을 이룩했지만, 우리 자신은 갇혀버리고 말았습니다. 대량생산을 가능하게 한 기계는 우리에게 결핍을 가져다 주었습니다. 지식은 우리를 냉정하고 냉소적으로 만들었습니다. 생각은 너무 많이 하면서도 느끼는 것은 거의 없습니다.

 

More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in man; cries out for universal brotherhood; for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women, and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.

기계보다는 인간성이 더욱 필요하고, 지식보다는 친절과 관용이 더욱 필요합니다. 이러한 자질들이 없다면 인생은 비참해지고 결국 모든 것을 잃게 될 것입니다. 비행기와 라디오 방송은 우리를 더욱 가깝게 연결시켰습니다. 이러한 발명의 진짜 의도는 인간의 선함과 전지구적 형제애와 우리 모두의 화합을 호소하기 위함입니다. 지금도 내 목소리가 세계 방방곡곡에 울려 퍼져나가, 죄 없는 사람들을 고문하고 가두게 하는 제도에 희생된 수백만의 절망하고 있는 남녀노소에게까지 들리고 있지 않습니까?

 

To those who can hear me, I say“Do not despair.” The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men willpass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return tothe people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.

지금 내 말을 듣고 있는 사람들에게 전합니다: 절망하지 마십시오! 우리가 겪는 불행은 탐욕에서, 인류의 발전을 두려워하는 자들의 조소에서 비롯된 것입니다. 증오는 지나가고 독재자들은 사라질 것이며, 그들이 인류로부터 앗아간 힘은 제자리를 찾을 것입니다. 인간이 그것을 위해 죽는 한 자유는 결코 소멸되지 않을 것입니다.

 

Soldiers! Don’t give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you and enslave you; who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel! Who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder!

군인들이여, 그대들을 경멸하고 노예로 만들며, 당신들의 행동과 사고와 감정, 당신들의 삶까지 통제할 뿐만 아니라, 당신들을 가축처럼 조련하고 먹이를 주고 다루어 총알받이로 사용하고 있는 이 잔인무도한 자들에게 굴복하지 마시오!

 

Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men—machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have a love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate; the unloved and the unnatural.

이런 비인간적인 자들에게 기계의 지성과 마음을 가진, 기계나 다름없는 자들에게 굴복하지 마시오! 당신들은 기계가 아닙니다. 당신들은 가축도 아닙니다. 인간입니다! 당신들의 마음 속에는 인류에 대한 사랑이 숨쉬고 있습니다. 당신들은 증오하지 않습니다. 사랑 받지 못한 자들, 비인간적인 자들만이 증오를 합니다.

 

Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of St. Luke, it’s written “the kingdom of God is within man”—not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people, have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.Then in the name of democracy, let us use that power. Let us all unite.

군인들이여, 노예제도를 위해 싸우지 말고 자유를 위해 투쟁하십시오. 누가복음 17장에서 “하나님의 왕국은 사람 속에 있다”고 했습니다. 한 사람, 한 무리가 아닌 모든 인간 안에, 바로 당신들 마음 속에 있는 것입니다. 기계를 창조할 능력을 지닌 당신들은 행복을 창조할 수 있는 힘도 지니고 있습니다! 이번 삶을 자유롭고 아름답게, 멋진 모험으로 만들 수 있는 힘을 지닌 것입니다. 그러니, 민주주의의 이름으로 그 힘을 사용합시다. 우리 모두 하나가 됩시다.

 

Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfill their promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people!

새로운 세계를 위해 투쟁합시다. 모두에게는 일할 기회를, 젊은이에게 미래를, 노인에게는 안정을 제공할 훌륭한 세계를 건설하기 위해 싸웁시다. 짐승 같은 무리들도 이것들을 약속하며 권력을 키웠지만, 그들의 약속은 지켜지지 않았으며 앞으로도 절대 지켜지지 않을 것입니다. 그들은 스스로를 자유롭게 하면서 민중은 노예로 전락시켰습니다!

 

Now let us fight to fulfill that promise! Let us fight to free the world! To do away with national barriers! To do away with greed, with hate and intolerance! Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us all unite!

이제 그들이 했던 그 약속을 이행하기 위해 싸웁시다! 세계를 해방시키고, 나라간의 경계를 없애며, 탐욕과 증오와 배척을 버리도록 투쟁합시다! 이성이 다스리는 세계, 과학의 발전이 모두에게 행복을 주는 세계를 만들도록 투쟁합시다. 군인들이여, 민주주의의 이름으로 우리 모두 하나로 뭉칩시다!
