Completely agree. History isn't just about learning set "facts" approved by governments.

완전히 동의함. 역사는 그저 정부가 허용한 지정된 "사실"만 배우는게 아님.

tbh i'd argue while facts are a part of history, all of history is subjective. It's a story, a narrative.
Narratives are how you tie the facts together and try to make sense of them. You'll can't look critically at someone's narrative unless you know your facts.
내러티브는 어떻게 사실을 묶어놓고 이해하기 쉽게 만드는 거임. 사실을 알고 있지 않는 이상 다른사람의 내러티브를 비판적으로 볼수 없음.

I think the younger generation will be highly receptive of this. If I happen to recall, there was a huge controversy a while back regarding the textbook issues.
젊은 세대들이 이거에 대해서 아주 수용적일것 같음. 내가 맞다면 전에 교과서 문제에 대해서 큰 논란이 있었다고 기억함.

I wish Japan would do the same.
A couple of years ago Japanese went to a major US publisher that was working on a new history book that'd be read by millions, including the many foreigners that study in the US from abroad. It was only two sentences but they were important, it mentioned Japanese comfort women. One of the great atrocities of WW2.
Needless to say politicians in Washington blasted them for even suggesting it and of course the Chinese had the 'told you so' attitude. I believe it's also around when Abe went to a Shrine Chinese are highly sensitive to and was viewed as a dangerous nationalistic view.
Moral of the story, people will fight to change history - don't let them, ever.
일본도 이랬으면 좋겠음.
몇년전에 일본인들이 해외 미국 유학생들을 포함한 백만명들이 넘게 읽을 새 역사책을 쓰고 있는 어느 미국 주요 출판사에 가서 따졌음. 고작 두 문단이었지만 중요한 거였는데, 일본 위안부에 관한 거였음. 2차 세계대전의 큰 잔혹행위 중 하나 말임.
말 안해도 알겠지만 워싱턴 정치인들은 그딴 제안을 하는 것만으로도 크게 비판했고 당연히 중국에서는 "거봐라"식으로 굴었음. 아마 아베가 어느 중국인들이 민감하게 여기는 신사(야스쿠니?)에 가서 위험한 국가주의를 보이게 한것처럼 보였을 때일 거임.
교훈은 역사를 왜곡하려고 있는 사람들이 있을것인데 절대로 그렇게 해서는 안됨.
시게에 올릴 수도 있지만 역사에 대한 관점에 대한 시각들이 있어서 여기에 더 맞다고 보고 올립니다.

American schools do this, it's really for the best.
I learned all of the bad stuff.. it's actually what sticks out more than anything else. Slavery, George Washington and his slaves, Vietnam war, Watergate, Agent Orange even. Through near self-hatred you also start your life off already knowing all of the major skeletons in your nations closet. It's a really powerful tool. I don't get why some countries want to distort history.. especially places like South Korea and Japan that're so advanced and so far from dictatorship / authoritarianism.
We also were encouraged to get into debates that'd sometimes get heated.. and equally encouraged to source facts. It was extremely healthy and appropriate.
미국 학교들이 이러는데 최선이라고 생각함.
나쁜것들 다 배웠음. 사실 딴것들도보다 확 띔. 노예들이라던가, 조지 워싱턴과 노예들이라던가, 베트남 전쟁, 워터게이트, 에이전트 오렌지도. 이렇게 자학에 가까운 식으로 인생을 시작할때쯤 자국의 거의 모든 수치들을 알고 있는 거임. 이건 정말 강력한 도구임. 왜 일부 국가들이 역사를 왜곡하고 싶어하는지 모르겠음.. 특히 남한이나 일본처럼 발전되고 독재와 권위주의에서 먼 나라들이 말임.
뭔가 착각을...또 가끔씩 열을 올리는 토론에도 참여하는게 권장되고...동시에 사실의 출처를 제시하는 것도. 아주 건전하고 적절했음.
