Ages in Korea are often confusing for Americans. Americans give their age from the date of their birth whereas give their age from the year of their birth, or something Iike that. When asked their age by an American, a Korean might repIy: "I am 22, but in American years I am 20." What? Therefore to be helpful just think a bit first and give the American age in years. Another is the number of family members. Ask a Korean how many members in their family and they might answer" Six: father, mother and thee sisters." Whereas, an American would answer "Four, I have three sisters." The American logic is that everyone has two so they do not count them for such a question.
