반기문 총장 조상이 베트남인?..성 같은 베트남가정 방문에 억측
베트남에서 반기문 유엔 사무총장의 조상이 베트남인 아니냐는 말들이 퍼지고 있다.
이는 반 총장이 국제개발 협력 방안을 논의하기 위해 지난 5월 22일 이틀간의 일정으로 베트남을 방문했을 때 마지막 날 비공개로 자신과 한자 성이 같은 베트남인 가정에 들른 사실이 최근 유튜브와 페이스북을 통해 알려지면서다.
반 총장 측은 조상을 찾아간 것이 아니라고 부인했지만, 현지 언론은 많은 관심을 보이고 있다.
반 총장은 당시 부인 유인택 여사와 함께 베트남 수도 하노이 외곽에 있는 판 후이 타인씨 집을 찾아 사당에 향을 올렸다. 판 씨의 성을 한자로 쓰면 반 총장과 같다.
방명록에는
"潘(반) 가의 일원으로, 지금은 유엔 사무총장으로, 조상의 가르침을 따르도록 노력하겠다"(As one of 潘 family, now serving as Secretary General UN, I commit myself that I will try to follow the teaching of ancestors.)
는 글을 남겼다.
이를 놓고 일간 탕니엔은 "단순한 외교적 활동으로 봐야 한다", "과거에 떠이 썬 왕조를 위해 일했던 판씨 가문의 누군가가 응웬 왕조의 복수를 피해 해외로 이주했을 수 있다"는 등 전문가들의 의견까지 전했다.
이에 대해 유엔 사무총장실의 한 관계자는 3일 연합뉴스에 "판씨 가문이 베트남에서 유명한 학자 집안으로 존경받아 잠시 비는 시간에 들른 것일 뿐 반 총장의 조상과는 관련이 없다"며 "중국과 베트남에 반 총장과 같은 성이 많다"고 확대 해석을 경계했다.

Insiders who were directly and indirectly involved in an unannounced visit paid by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to a house of worship in northern Vietnam in May have said the UN chief came to the place to know about his ancestors.
On May 23, Secretary General Ban visited the house of worship of the Phan Huy family in the rural part of the capital of Hanoi, Phan Huy Thanh, a member of the family, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Saturday.
Thanh revealed to Tuoi Tre that after the visit, historian Phan Huy Le, who is another member of the family, and the interpreter who accompanied the UN chief during that visit confirmed to him that Secretary General Ban had said his ancestors once told him that he is a descendant of the Phan Huy family in Vietnam.
Thanh, of 16th generation of the Phan Huy family, has been assigned to look after the house of worship in Sai Son Commune, Quoc Oai District for a long time.
He was one of 18 members of the Phan Huy family who greeted a delegation led by the 71-year-old UN chief and his wife and guided them throughout the visit to the house.
During the 45-minute trip, Secretary General Ban burned incense, wrote in the guestbook of the house, posed for some pictures with the Vietnamese people there, and then left, Thanh recounted.
He also picked some children, talked and shook hands with some people in the family, saying “cam on” (thank you) in Vietnamese, Thanh told Tuoi Tre.
When asked if the UN chief mentioned the reason for the visit, Thanh recalled Ban neither said anything about it nor wanted to see the family’s genealogy through the interpreter.
He just wrote some words in the guestbook, stating that he was happy to visit the place.
“I am deeply humbled to visit and pay my deep respect to this house of worship of 潘輝注 [Phan Huy Chu] and other 潘 [Phan] family members,” Secretary General Ban’s writing reads.
“Thank you for preserving this house of worship. As one of 潘 [Phan] family, now serving as Secretary General of UN, I commit myself that I will try to follow the teachings of ancestors,” according to the writing.

He wrote down his name and position at the UN in English, Chinese, and Korean, with his name translated into Vietnamese as Phan Co Van.
Two weeks before the visit, someone informed Phan Huy Giam, a member of the family who is also assigned to be the caretaker of the house, that a delegation of the United Nations would come to the place, Thanh said.
On May 21 and 22, a number of police officers from the Hanoi police department worked with Quoc Oai authorities on preparation for the visit.
Thanh said as he knew nothing more about that, he contacted the person who had notified Giam of the visit, on May 22 evening and was told that the delegation would be led by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
He then made a phone call to Phan Huy Huan, the head of the Phan Huy family now, and asked him to be at the house early next morning.
Previously, historian Phan Huy Le told Tuoi Tre he did not join the delegation for a personal reason, but had gifted four books written by Phan Huy Chu, a prominent member of the family that included many famous intellectuals and scholars back in the 18th century.
Le said he has asked a Korean professor who is an expert on genealogy to trace the origin of the UN chief so that they can then compare it with the Phan Huy family tree.
A representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Vietnam told Tuoi Tre that Secretary General Ban left a meeting at the Vietnamese National Assembly after giving a speech there on May 23 for personal matters.
"Only a few bodyguards accompanied him at that time, and everyone in UNDP knew that it was a private matter, as he did not want any reporters to follow," he said.
The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was unaware of the visit, confirming that this was a private affair of the UN chief.
“Thank you for preserving this house of worship. As one of 潘 [Phan] family, now serving as Secretary General of UN, I commit myself that I will try to follow the teachings of ancestors,” according to the writing.
Facebook photos reveal alleged Vietnamese ancestry of UN chief

Several photos surfaced on Facebook this week purportedly show that United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has Vietnamese ancestry.
The South Korean U.N. chief allegedly paid a visit to a house of worship in an outlying area in Hanoi, where members of the Phan Huy family cherish their ancestors, according to the Facebook photos.
The visit was made on May 23, according to captions under the pictures.
Ban was accompanied by his wife, Ban Soon-Taek, with photos showing they bow in front of an altar that worhships the ancestors of the Phan Huy, a family whose many members were famous intellectuals and scholars back in the 18th century.
There are also a photo of the U.N. chief writing into a guest book,and one that shows what is believed to be his handwriting.
Ban purportedly wrote that he is humble to pay respects to the Phan Huy worship house, according to the photo.
The 71-year-old also thanked Phan Huy family members for preserving the house of worship and said he, “as one of the [Phan Huy] family,” is committed to following the teaching of the ancestors.
A Phan Huy family member, Phan Huy Thanh, confirmed to Nguoi Lao Dong (Labor) newspaper on Saturday Ban Ki-moon did visit the house of worship on May 23.
“Ban Ki-moon greeted people as he arrived, then walked straight into the Phan Huy worship house to pay tribute,” Thanh told Nguoi Lao Dong.
The U.N. chief then wrote the guest book and pose for a group photograph with other Phan Huy family members, Thanh said.
“He left with the accompanied officials at around 4:45 pm on a car.”Thanh said an intepreter had informed the caretakers of the house of worship of a visit by a U.N. delegation on May 10.On May 21, a security group came to discuss protection plans for Ban with the caretakers, he added.“Ban was very friendly,” Thanh said.“He hugged two small children when he came, and shook hands and said thank you to every one he met.”A local media person of the United Nations Development Program in Vietnam also confirmed the visit to Nguoi Lao Dong on Saturday, saying Ban made the visit “personally.”The U.N. chief had a 36-hour trip staring on May 22 in Vietnam,during which he discussed with local leaders many important issues, including peace, world security and human rights. 반기문 총장은 베트남 판(潘)씨와 같은 뿌리?

반기문 총장은 광주 반씨다.
반씨는 기성(岐城)·광주(光州)·남평(南平)의 3본이 있지만 모두 같은 분파이다. 기성은 거제도의 옛 지명으로 기성 반씨를 거제 반씨라고도 한다. 광주 반씨의 시조는 조선의 개국공신으로 광주백(光州伯)에 봉해진 반충(潘忠)이다. 그의 현손인 이조판서 반석평(潘碩枰)은 청렴한 문신으로 이름났다. 그가 청주 율봉찰방에 있을 때 음성군 원남면 마송리 옛 마피동과 보천리 견두산을 길지로 택해 두었다가 아우 반석권(潘碩權)에게 알려주었고, 반석권이 거기에 정착해 지금 집성촌이 만들어졌다고 한다.
광주반씨는 현재 충청북도 음성군 원남면 일원에 집성촌을 이루며 150여 호가 살고 있다. 반총장은 원남면 상당리 출신이다.
2006년 반기문 당시 외교통상부 장관이 제8대 유엔 사무총장에 정식 선출되던날 고향인 충북 음성군 원남면 행치마을엔 주민들이 현수막을 내걸고, “세계의 대통령”이 탄생한 것을 축하했다. 특히 상당1리 18가구 중 17가구가 광주 반씨여서 성씨에 대한 유대가 강하다고 한다.

반 총장의 광주 반씨는 대본인 거제 반씨에서 갈라져 나온 것으로, 거제 반씨는 중국을 근원지로 하고 있다.
반(潘)씨는 흉노 누번족에서 파생된 성씨로 전한시대에 한족에 동화됐다고 한다. 중국 허난(河南)성 형양에서 성씨를 형성했으며, 중국 주나라 문왕의 여섯째 아들인 계손이 반(潘)이라는 지명을 식읍으로 하사받아 그 곳을 성으로 삼은데서 유래했다고 한다.
거제 반씨의 시조 반부(潘阜)는 남송 이종 때 문과에 장원 급제해 한림학사를 거쳐 이부상서를 지내고 원나라 제국대장공주를 따라 고려에 들어와 충렬왕 때 왜구를 토벌한 공으로 기성(거제)부원군에 봉해졌다. 65세에 벼슬을 사직하고 기성으로 내려가 여생을 마쳤다. 후손들이 그를 시조로 하고 거제를 관향으로 삼아 대를 이어갔다.
후손들이 전국 각지에 흩어져 살면서 사는 곳에 따라 기성(岐城), 충주(忠州), 남평(南平), 결성(結城), 청도(淸道) 홍천(洪川), 광주(光州) 등 17본으로 갈리었다. 반(潘)씨는 2000년 대한민국 통계청 인구조사에서 2만3,216명으로 조사됐으며, 한국 성씨 인구 순위 84위인 희성이다. 여러 본향의 반씨들은 모두 한뿌리이므로 족보를 만들 때 대본인 거제 반씨로 합쳐 족보(合譜)를 만들고 있다.

반 총장이 선출됐을 때, 중국 허난(河南)성의 판(潘)씨 집성촌이 들썩였다고 한다. 당시 중국 언론에 따르면 허난성 싱양(滎陽)현의 가오산(高山)진 판야오(潘窯)촌은 판씨 집성촌으로 반총장 선출을 `가족의 일'처럼 반겼다고 한다.
판야오촌은 "천하의 판씨는 모두 이곳에서 배출됐다"는 자부심을 갖고 있는 곳으로 지금도 주민의 3분의 1 가량이 판씨이다. 판야오촌에 남아있는 `세계 판씨 종보(宗譜)'엔 주(周)나라 성왕(成王)이 문왕(文王)의 셋째아들인 계손(季孫)을 싱양후(候)로 봉한 이후 판씨의 역사가 시작됐다고 전하고 있다.
이후 남당(南唐) 시기에 태사(太師)를 지낸 62세손 판여우(潘佑)의 셋째아들 원제(文節)와 넷째아들 원장(文壯)이 흉노족과 전쟁중 포로로 잡혔다 고려 사신과의 인연과 추천으로 거제도에 내려와 뿌리를 내렸다는 것이 이 종보에 기재된 내용이다.
당시 연합뉴스 보도에 따르면 판야오촌의 세계판씨문화연구회 회장이자 판씨 85대 후손인 판젠민(潘建民) 회장은 당시에 "반 총장이 유엔 사무총장 경선에 참가했을 때부터 우리는 그에게 관심을 갖고 있었다"며 "그는 우리와 혈연 관계에 있음에 틀림없다"고 말했다고 한다.

베트남 판씨의 뿌리가 어디인지 연구 및 조사를 해보아야 할 일이다. 다만 성씨의 한자(潘)는 같다. 중국에서 潘을 ‘판’이라고 발음하고, 베트남에서도 중국과 비슷한 발음을 하는 것으로 알려져 있다.
이에 대해 유엔 사무총장실의 한 관계자는 연합뉴스와의 통화에서 "판씨 가문이 베트남에서 유명한 학자 집안으로 존경받아 잠시 비는 시간에 들른 것일 뿐 반 총장의 조상과는 관련이 없다"과 확대해석을 경계했다.
하지만 그는 "중국과 베트남에 반 총장과 같은 성이 많다"고 말했다. 중국의 반씨와 한국의 반씨가 먼 조상에서 한뿌리임은 양국이 확인하는 바다. 그렇다면 베트남의 판씨와 중국 반씨의 관계를 규명하는 일이 남아있을 것이다.
반 총장이 뭔가 심증을 가지고 베트남의 판씨 사당을 찾은게 아닐까. 반 총장이 언어의 수사학에 익숙한 외교관이지만, 사당의 방명록에 ‘반씨의 일원으로서(As one of 潘 family)’라고 표현했을땐 뭔가 인연이 있음을 암시한 것이 아닐까. 게다가 방명록에 '조상의 가르침(the teaching of ancestors)'을 따르겠다고 쓴 것은 뭔가 성씨의 비밀을 암시하는 듯하다.
