Hyundai Signals High Performance Ambitions

New ‘N’ brand will compete with BMW’s M, Cadillac’s V-Series and Lexus F souped up models.

SEOUL— Hyundai Motor Co. outlined plans to compete against the high performance cars of rivals such as BMW AG and General Motors Co.’s Cadillac, saying it expects to begin selling souped up models within two years.

현대 자동차는 BMW 그룹이나 캐딜락 같은 고성능 자동차 브랜드와 비교 할 수 있을 만한 고성능 모델들을 2년 안에 생산할 계획을 내놓았다. 

For decades the South Korean auto maker’s growth has been driven by lower-budget sedans and compact vehicles, but on Wednesday it disclosed a coming high-performance “N” brand line, which Hyundai says will eventually include sports cars.

지난 몇십년간 남한의 이 자동차 회사의 성장은 저가 세단이나 소형차덕에 이루어 졌지만, 지난 수요일 현대는 고성능 N브랜드라인을 공개하고, 언젠가는 스포츠카도 생산 할 것을 밝혔다.

“Hyundai doesn’t stand for high-performance cars. Not yet. But this will change,” said Albert Biermann, who joined Hyundai in April to lead development of its new models, in an interview ahead of this week’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

"현대는 고성능 차 시장에선 [다른 경쟁사들에게] 상대도 안됩니다. 아직은 그렇죠. 하지만 곧 그건 바뀔 겁니다." 지난 4월에 새로운 모델을 개발하기 위해 현대가 영입한 알버트 비어만이 이번 프랑크푸르트 모터쇼 사전에 한 인터뷰에서 한 말이다. 

Previously, the German 58-year-old was chief engineer for BMW’s M series of high performance cars for more than 30 years. The coming cars would compete against Mercedes-Benz AMG models, Cadillac V-series and Audi AG’s RS andToyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus F subbrands.

지난 30년 이상 알버트 비어만은 BMW에서 M시리즈를 담당하는 최고 엔지니어였다. 현대가 개발하고 있는 차들은 벤츠 AMG모델이나, 캐딜락 V-series, 아우디의 RS, 토요다의 Lexus F 브랜드와 동급으로서 경쟁할 것이다.

In Frankfurt, Hyundai showcased the N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo sports car, which will be featured in the latest installment of the Sony Corp.’s PlayStation Gran Turismo videogame series.

프랑크푸르트에서 현대는 N2025 Vision Gran Turismo 스포츠카를 선보였다. 이 차는 소니의 플레이 스테이션용 게임인 그란 투리스모의 새 시리즈에 나올 계획이다.
